Dragon Army Basketball Is A Digital Training Academy
As coaches and trainers, our emphasis during in-person sessions will always be on . Gym time is precious; we can’t take an hour out of every practice to sit down and talk about basketball theory. Players need every rep they can get when they have access to an indoor court.
That said, drill-based training is only a tiny part of what constitutes true “skill development.” Players need a solid foundation of skills to be successful, yes, but they also need to understand the mental side of the game, too — they have to learn how to make high-level reads so that their skills are actually usable. And that’s our ultimate goal with this online program: to help players better understand the game and the reasons why different abilities are necessary so they can develop useable skills.
Here’s how the curriculum is structured:
DAB Drills
The DAB Drills section is home to our complete video drill library. Our drills range in difficulty (there is content for complete beginners as well as elite high school and college players) and are intended to be functional above all else — no flashy gimmicks to be found here, sorry.
Young and/or inexperienced players should focus most of their attention here. We need to lay a solid foundation of skills before we can get into the more theoretical content.
In 99% of cases, a player who works on the drills in our library for 15-30 minutes a day will be skilled enough to move on to higher-level content in 8-12 months. Some players (especially very young ones) will be ready even sooner — it’s shocking how fast players progress when they get reps in daily.
The Main Page
The main “Dragon Army Basketball” page is where the truly educational content starts.
A vast range of topics will be covered here, but they’ll all have one thing in common — an emphasis on understanding ideas. How to make different reads in different situations, how to develop go-to skillsets that are suited to your strengths and weaknesses, how to operate effectively in the context of your team’s offense, how to think about help defense, etc.
Our goal is to develop players' intellects here because that’s the missing link when it comes to most basketball skill development. Coaches love talking drills but neglect to teach kids how the skills they develop via hard work can actually be used effectively in game situations.
As noted before, this content requires a solid foundation of skills. It’s best suited to middle and high school players, both because they tend to have enough skills to execute on reads and because they’ve developed enough intellectually to understand more abstract and theoretical content.
That doesn’t mean it’s worthless for younger players, though. Even if your child is young and lacks the reading comprehension skills required to sit down and understand a full article, a lot of the ideas themselves are intuitive enough that they’ll make sense if you explain the basics of it. We’ll always include simplified explanations of the advanced topics that you can share with a younger player who might be ready for it.
The Film Room
If studying the main page and DAB drills earns you a bachelor’s degree in basketball knowledge, the film room is where you’ll go to get your Ph.D.
We’ll be breaking down game footage of all sorts — different players, different styles of play, different scenarios, etc.
The film room is for true basketball junkies — those select few players who want to understand the game at a professional level. If you study the video breakdowns for a month, you’ll know more about basketball than each and every one of your teammates; if you study them for a year, you’ll know more than the average high school coach; if you study them for multiple years, you’ll know so much about basketball that we’ll have to hire you so you don’t go off and start your own basketball training business that runs ours out of business.
All jokes aside, the film room will take your basketball understanding to the next level. There isn’t a single other affordable program on the planet that’s teaching this kind of information.
